The Jem comics originate from the UK, and as much as 31 stories were released. These are the same
stories that were translated and released in other countries like
the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and France, with some changes in order and sometimes
re-coloring or re-drawn art, and sometimes even unique new art for covers.
As for the comics released in Mexico, those were different stories especially drawn for Mexico and consisted of atleast 11 issues with one story each. Then in 2011 a collaboration comic featuring Hasbro's different brands, was released. So in total, that is atleast 43 comic stories featuring Jem, plus all the book stories some of which are drawn in a comic book style. Along with the book stories the amount of printed adventures of Jem and the Holograms, actually add up to more than the amount of episodes in the animated series. All comics are quite difficult to find, especially certain issues, but the Mexican comics are the rarest. If you by any chance have the rest of the Mexican comics, any of the other comics missing on this page, put "Jem comics" in the subject line and send me an email.
Jem (UK), 1986/1987 by London Editions Magazines (Egmont):
In the comics, Eric still owns half of Starlight Music, the Misfits are signed, and Jerrica
and Eric are partners promoting the rival groups, which places the stories inbetween the
first cartoon episode "The Beginning" and the second "Disaster", although they sing songs
from later episodes of the five parter. Since Eric already owns half of Starlight Music here,
it's instead Starlight House he wants, apparently to sell the land. The reason they decided to
write it as Eric still owned half Starlight Music was probably because there was no continuation
to the series yet, no way for the Misfits to market themselves, no Misfits Music for Eric and the
Misfits yet.
Jem and the Holograms sometimes sing songs which are actually names of doll fashions.
Many times the characters wear the wrong outfits according to the cartoon. Jem gets to wear several of the
doll line fashions which in the cartoon were worn by the Holograms.
Jerrica has to have a make-up box with her to strengthen the signal from Synergy while in
another country.
Stormer has her flower on the wrong side according to the cartoon, but the right side
according to the dolls.
The Starlight girls look very different from the cartoon, and usually it's completely different
girls with other names.
The story writers really seemed to like using the character Eric Raymond alot, and many of the
stories were built around Eric causing trouble for the Holograms, and somehow it all turns to their
advantage by luck.
Melvyn, an old singer-songwriter, gets kicked out of Starlight Music by Eric Raymond when he fails to
provide modern enough songs. After Eric sabotages Jem and the Holograms' concert, Jerrica gets
an idea how to help Melvyn.
Characters:
Jem/Jerrica and the Holograms, Rio, The Misfits, Eric, Zipper, and Melvyn Megastar (old
singer-songwriter who used to work for Starlight Music, owner of Sunnyside Home).
International:
Funny notes:
Eric says a line from the first episode of the cartoon "This is a business, not a charity.",
also to Jerrica, but in a slightly different situation.
The Misfits throw dart at a picture of Jem, like they do in the cartoon episode Britrock.
Zipper doesn't look alot like in the cartoon, with his different hairstyle and brighter
blonde hair, maybe that's why Rio nor Jerrica recognise him. But then again they weren't
very familiar with him early in the cartoon.
A jamming device is used to distort the music for the Holograms. This might have been
influenced by the device the doll Clash was said to come with.
Aja can play flute, she infact owns one and performs with the Holograms on it, but only
for a special reason.
Jerrica goes on stage instead of Jem, when Synergy's signal doesn't work. But she
performs the songs of the singer-songwriter Melvyn.
Jem sings the song "Only The Beginning".

another country. This was never considered in the cartoon.

make-up case, in shape of a heart, which will boost the power of her earring projectors anywhere
in the world.
Pizzazz calls Eric "darling".
Roxy thinks Rio is gorgeous.
Roxy steals a lighter from Eric. And Eric smokes. Which he never does in the cartoon.
Jem sings and plays keyboard to a song called "Let's Rock This Town", which is the name of a doll
fashion.
Eric has connections in England.
Eric Raymond and the Misfits have spread rumors that Jem and the Holograms have
bribed disc jockeys to play their music instead of the Misfits. Even Lindsey
Pierce buys the story. The result is that all disc jockeys stop playing the
Holograms in fear that they will come across as bribed, and all the Holograms'
appearances are canceled.
Characters:
Jem/Jerrica and the Holograms, Rio, The Misfits, Eric Raymond, and Lindsey Pierce.
International:
Funny notes:
Lindsey Pierce is in this story, but she has different look, looking more like she
did in the first five episodes. She is said to be the most popular presenter on TV.
Here she isn't a friend of the Holograms though, as she takes the Misfits' side.
The outfits the Misfits wear are switched around. This isn't the only example of this.
Here Pizzazz wears Stormer's Makin' Mischief, Roxy is wearing Pizzazz'
Just Misbehavin', and Stormer is wearing Roxy's Let The Music Play.
